David Goss
David Goss (PhD.) was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1966 and immigrated to Israel in 1977. He is a painter and researcher of history and theory of design and art and design in Africa. He has lectured at various Universities and art and design academies, including in Industrial Design of the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, the Technion, Haifa; The Shenkar College, Ramat Gan; and African Studies at the Ben-Gurion University, Beer Sheba; the Kalisher College of Art, Tel Aviv, and more.
His academic studies include: The departments of Economics and Business management, The Hebrew University Jerusalem, Israel (BA, 1990). The Fine Art Department, the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel (BFA, 1994). The Faculty Graduate Program in the Arts, the Art Faculty, Tel Aviv University (MA Graduated with excellence, 2006). The interdisciplinary program, The Art Faculty. Tel Aviv University (PhD, 2016) dissertation title: The Function of Liminality in Contemporary Design.
Goss has published articles on liminality in Design -focusing on phenomenon outside conventional design categories including: Grotesque by Design,Design Priniciples and Practices, Common Ground (2010), Zoomorphic Chairs, Animals and Society Journal, Tel Aviv University, (2014), Thoughts on Liminoid Design, Material Matters, Benyamini Contemporary Ceramic Center(2016), The Invention of a Chair Tradition in Ethiopia: A Case Study of Liminoid Design, The Journal of Design History, Oxford University Press, (2020).
He has received awards and grants for his artistic and academic activity, such as: The Israeli Young Artist Prize 1997. The Ministry of Education and Culture, Israel (1997). The Artist - Teacher prize, The Ministry of Education and Culture, Israel (1998, 1999). The Yeda foundation for higher education (2000). The Art Work acquisition prize, The Ministry of Culture, Israel (2001). Honorable Mention for Excellence in Teaching, The Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, the Technion, Haifa (2008). The Rabinovitz foundation, Tel Aviv (2008, 2011, 2016). Finalist of the International Award for Excellence. The Design Journal: Design Principles and Practices, (2010). Goss has exhibited his artwork in Israel and abroad (Nigeria, China, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Palestine) had artistic collaborations and creative dialogues with other artists in duo exhibitions like with: Obuh Christopher Nelson (Moving Mountains Moving Oceans in 2021) Einat Leader (It’s not Personal in 2007; Borrowed Syndrome in 2015; Grey Matter in 2019); Sigalit Landau (Emulsion in 2013) and Farid Abu Shakra (Two Gardens in 2000) His solo ehibitions include: Separation Points (2019) The African Souvenir: Looking at you looking at me, (2014); Myopia(2011) Mudcakes (2009); Wait sheep, the grass will grow (2003); Shmitta; Works 1993-2000,(2002); Kneh Mida (1999); One, Square, Meter.(1998); Dapei Yamin (1998); Min Domem, (1995).
